Paris to build $145 million cable car system

(CNN) — Paris is already home to some of the most popular attractions in the world, and the French capital could be on the verge of getting its first-ever urban cable car.

Proposed plans for a brand new 4.5 kilometer long aerial tramway linking various southeastern suburbs to the Paris metro are advancing, with construction expected to begin this year.

Scheduled to open in 2025, the Project “Cable 1” will connect the Parisian suburb of Villeneuve-Saint-Georges to the Pointe du Lac de Créteil station in Île-de-France in just 17 minutes, less than half the time that a bus would take.

Renderings of the cable car line, led by architecture studio Atelier Schall, have just been released, offering a deeper look at the highly anticipated project, which recently underwent pre-construction feasibility studies. .

Cable 1 (C1) has an estimated price tag of 132 million euros (about $145 million) and is expected to serve around 11,000 people daily, with only 30 seconds between cabins at peak times. Each cabin will accommodate up to 10 passengers.

While French cities like Brest and Grenoble already have similar cable car systems, Cable 1 would be the first for Paris if approved. However, several other proposed aerial trams are currently in various stages of development.

First proposed in 2008, Cable 1 was deemed necessary due to the hilly terrain of Créteil, which is also home to a high-speed train line and a motorway, making alternative air transport systems less practical.

To build the device, 33 white pylons, designed to “integrate harmoniously” into the landscape, will be erected along the suburbs.

“Public transport in Ile-de-France, the Regions of Ile-de-France and the Department of Val-de-Marne decided in 2016 to equip themselves with a new innovative tool for public transport solutions which offered Ile-de-France residents on their network the region’s first urban transport line by cable car,” says Laurent Probst, Managing Director of IDF Mobilités.

Cable 1 will serve five stops in total, Temps Durables and Emile Combes in Limeil-Brévannes, Emile Zola in Valenton and Bois Matar in Villeneuve-Saint-Georges, with Pointe du Lac in Créteil as its terminus, located not far from the metro 8.

Each station will have only one floor to ensure that the system is “100% accessible” for passengers.

Paris is not the only European city to have a cable car system. Last year, Amsterdam gave the green light to a 1.5 kilometer long cable car that will cross the IJ River, connecting Amsterdam-West and Amsterdam-Noord when it is operational in 2025.

In London, a cable car built on the River Thames has struggled to attract regular passengers since it opened in 2012, and only managed to avoid draining the city’s transport finances due to a sponsorship deal profit which will soon expire.
